How to read this table

Find your degrees of freedom down the left. For a goodness-of-fit or independence test, choose the column whose right-tail area equals alpha and reject when the observed statistic exceeds the cell.

The lower-tail column, and what it is for

A confidence interval for a variance uses both tails. The upper critical value produces the lower endpoint because the chi-square value is in the denominator. At df 19 and alpha 0.05, the cells are 8.90652 and 32.8523.

Why there is no infinity row

Chi-square has mean df and variance twice df, so every quantile grows without bound. The Wilson-Hilferty approximation is useful on paper at large df, but the exact lookup here makes interpolation or approximation unnecessary.

How this is calculated

Grid cells are generated at build time through the shared chi-square quantile. Reverse upper tails use the direct survival function, so a small finite p-value is not erased by subtracting a rounded CDF from 1.
